RL is a bitch & other ramblings...

I've been away from these pages & mostly out of game for about 6 weeks now. I'm on extended assignment in the Chicago area, and as much as I love the folks and facilities at the Hilton, trying to play Eve on their wireless connection is like trying to drink a milkshake through a juice box straw. Technically possible, but practically unsatisfying & very frustrating.

I've priced AT&T air cards, but I'm afraid that the 5GB / month bandwidth cap wouldn't be sufficient. (If you have personal experience that you'd like to share, I'd certainly welcome your input!)

In the meantime, I'm online as much as I can be when I'm home every other weekend, wishing I could take my FIOS connection with me!

The project team I'm on includes guys of all ages and I let my true colors slip early on in a meeting when I judged a proposed course of action "a fail cascade waiting to happen". After the meeting wrapped, one of the 20-Somethings asked "Uhmm.... Are you a... well... a gamer?". I shrugged & replied "Well, I have been known to take internet spaceships fairly seriously." He still hasn't decided if I'm jacking with him or telling him the truth. ;P

In game, I'm turning my attention toward Black Ops. With the addition of a fuel bay, this class of hulls is going to be very interesting in the future. Black Ops + Cov Ops + Stealth Bombers & Recons = the potential for a very interesting style of roaming gang.

Seppuku has merged and you'll soon see new graphics here. For now, this will have to do:

Asuri here,

Glad to see your staying busy, sorry your not getting to be more in game.

Regarding AT&T air cards, I'm assuming you mean a prepaid/subscription mobile broadband service. I've been playing EVE on an Orange 3.6Mbit plan for more than a year now. Eve on its own is not a bandwidth hog, even when I stay logged in most of the day Eve itself doesn't eat up more than 60-80MB of traffic.

The hog here is voice comms. If you're in fleet, you'll see it fly. I don't know how much time you spend on that. The traffic also depends on the codec you pick. Pick a 5.1kbps codec and voice quality will be pretty bad, but traffic will be lower than if you pick a GSM 16.4kbps codec.

Also, watch out for Youtube vids, they don't look like much but add up. Luckily my plan is unlimited, so I needn't worry...

He's right about the 3G thing, 5GB should be ample. MMOs are specifically designed to decrease the amount of bandwidth associated with playing content. I read somewhere that the most intense bandwidth issues come from text. So I would avoid being logged into Jita 24/7.

I used a 3G 5GB AT&T network at my in-laws and didn't dent their monthly usage. I'd suggest you go for it if you really want to. Just realize, you'll get sucked into a monthly contract you may not need!

He lives! Great use of "failure cascade" in a meeting, I'll have to try that.

Which Hilton are you at? Some of them have a mix of wireless and wired. Have you tried asking at the front desk for a room with a wired connection? Assuming you can get a wired connection, you can then drop in an Apple Airport Express to make your own wireless network. (This option is often much more secure than your standard hotel wireless to boot.)

I play eve almost exclusively tethered to my cell phone. Have up to 5 accounts running while pvping, afk mining, auto-piloting etc.. I have 5gb data plan with verizon haven't gone over 2gb yet.
So good luck.

I'm still in SW. Long term in Chicago? Try long term in friggin' Mexico City. Despite my toon's hot, sexy, Mexican-sounding name, I'm not a hot Mexican woman (life would be so easy that way).

I'll catch up with you guys REAL soon, though.
